PAUL PRESTIPINO ["Press-ti-PEE-no"] is an Australian-born artist of Sicilian descent. Beyond his distinctive solo projects as a writer and musician, he has worked extensively as a composer, sound designer, performance devisor and mentor across theatre, film, installation and radio in Australia, Europe and USA. His composition and soundtrack work is widely recognised for its emotional intensity and nuanced dramaturgical function, particularly in performances that engage with complex, political, or sensitive subject matter. His works have been described as “haunting” (The Guardian UK), “chillingly evocative” (Sydney Morning Herald), “brilliant” (The West Australian), and “ingeniously designed” (AussieTheatre). Born and raised on Noongar land in Perth, Paul began drumming in rock bands at age 11 before picking up other instruments to scratch a growing itch to write songs. (His first effort was a ballad for the Tolkien character, Samwise Gamgee). A journey through Egypt in 2000 inspired a lifelong practice of field recording. Attentive engagement with sound, and its role in shaping meaning, guides all of his work, including his solo projects as a writer and musician. After many years living and recording between New York and rural Sicily, he now lives on Gadigal land in Sydney, where he is a father of one.
